All diamonds are valuable and this value is based on a combination of factors. One of the most common factors is the rarity of the diamond. Diamonds possess certain qualities that are more rare than others, and thus are more valuable than diamonds that do not have these qualities. Jewellery and diamond experts use a standardised guidelines to easily evaluate these factors.

Diamond experts use this specific grading system to assess the qualities of each individual diamond that have been developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in the 1950’s. These guidelines established the use of four important and determining factors of the class of diamond. These four factors are known as the 4C’s: Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat. When they are all used together, they can be used to describe the quality of a finished and polished diamond. It is then the finished value of this diamond is based on a combination of these four factors.

Each diamond that Janai Jewellery delivers has its own special distinctive features which is why we assure that every diamond is treated to the highest ethical standards in the world that comply government administered guidelines.

All of the loose diamonds and diamond jewellery that Janai produce are assessed by GIA specialists and are accompanied with a certificate that has assessed the diamond with the 4C’s of diamond quality – cut, clarity, colour and carat, to ensure that you are receiving the diamond that you know you deserve.

Cut:
Diamonds are available in a wide range of cuts. Some of these cuts include a brilliant cut, princess cut and marquise cut. These refer to the shape in which the diamond has been cut into, for example, a princess cut diamond is in a square shape and is one of the most popular cuts for engagement rings. Generally, the higher standard of cut and the higher the quality of the finish of the diamond, the better the sparkle the diamond will give off – this is also referred to as the fire of the diamond.

Clarity:
As diamonds are created by pressure and heat and take millions of years to form. As diamonds occur naturally in the earth, they may have imperfections that have been caused by other stones or minerals, and these are called inclusions. The clarity of the diamond determines the amount of inclusions that are present in the stone. The clarity of a diamond can vary from flawless, also known as loupe-clear, to those inclusions that can be viable with the human eye that distort the clarity of the diamond, these are known as I3 or P3.

Colour:
Although a perfect and flawless diamond is completely clear and colourless, most diamonds have a yellow, or even brown, undertone in them. Subsequently, the more clear and colourless the diamond, the higher the grading.

Carat:
The carat of a diamond refers to the weight and size of the diamond. One carat is the equivalent to 0.2g and is then divided by 100 points to determine the carat of the diamond. Even small weight differences of 0.01g can make a big difference in the value of the diamond, however, it is important to not that weight is not the only determining factor of the value. Depending on the quality of the diamond, a smaller carat diamond can be worth more than a larger diamond of lesser quality.
